Bonus

The weekly bonus opportunity will be posted here.  Each one will be worth 1% which will be added to your final grade.  You can earn up to 10%.  This will help to balance homework that you forget to do or have trouble with as well as essays.

Each week I will post something that I think says something interesting (an article, an essay, a media clip) and I will ask you to respond to it using an essay format.

To get the points, you must post your reply on your own blog (or similar).  You don't have to use your real name if you don't want to--just make sure I know who you are.

What I expect from your answers:

  • 500 words or more--if you have fewer than this, you will receive 0 points--posted on your own blog (or similar).
  • A thesis (which breaks down to a what and a why)
    • What are you arguing against and why
    • What is your reaction to this and why
    • What parts of the argument are wrong and why
  • Supporting points
  • 2 quotes (when possible)
  • More "I say" than "they say"

We will go over these expectations in class.  If you have questions or need to talk about any of the bonus prompts, feel free to email me or meet with me.

New prompts will be posted on Monday.  You can respond to the prompts as long as they are still up.

To answer a bonus prompt, write a 500 word response on your own blog and post a link it in the comments of this page like this:  www.myblog.blogspot.com-- bonus #1 or something similar.

# 18:  Gilmore Girls

I wasn't a fan of all the episodes of the new season of Gilmore Girls, I thought that is had some interesting commentary on how things of changed since the last season nearly 10 years ago.  One of the most interesting things was Emily Gilmore's new made, Berta.  Emily was notorious for firing maids for any little reason.  In this season, she not only kept a maid who she did not understand as she supposedly didn't speak any recognizable language (although some of it seemed Spanish) Emily gradually let Berta whole extended family live in her house.  I can't tell what this means.  On the one hand, it seems insulting (implying that the family couldn't afford a place to live, that the whole family were practically indentured servants and working all the time, constant jokes about her language and trying to communicate with her) but at the same time she treated them like family and was tolerant of her.  If you wanted the new season of Gilmore Girls, what did you think of this situation?  Were there any other changes that surprised you?  Or did something stay the same that annoyed you.  Keep it to cultural evaluations rather than complaining about smaller details like their horrible makeup and hair and the stupidity of showing at least 15 minutes of a horrible musical that did not advance the plot or add anything to to story or characters.

If you did not watch the show, do the same with a remake of an old movie to a new  or a show that has been restarted after several years off.

Examples: Different versions of Sherlock Holmes, remakes like Footloose (where nothing changed and was pointless).

Do they keep the same default actors (white, male)?  Do they keep the same tropes?  Do they diversify?

Bonus 19:

It is the end of the year.  What are you struggling with?  What do you wish you would have learned earlier? Are you kicking yourself because you have to study an entire semester's worth of readings for the finals and you didn't do most of the readings in the first place (that's me *sob*).

Bonus 20:

Help me make my next class better.  I'm going to be teaching Discourse 300 and I haven't decided what I want to teach.  I think I am going to let the students pick a topic they are passionate about and throughout the whole semester, we will focus on different types of writing and they will experiment with those styles all while writing on different areas of their topics.

Or should I pick something like the Hero's Journey and have them all write about this topic?

What would you want to learn in Discourse 300?  It will be the last writing class for most students before they graduate.  What do you want to have mastered by this time?
